Meet a Chemistry Graduate Who Quitted a Well-Paying Job and Started Manufacturing Detergents

David Ochieng Maende, 50, decided to give up his steady paycheck and top management position to try his hand in business. He had worked at Chemelil Sugar Company for 26 years.

Maende graduated from University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Science. His decision was motivated by the fact that he was increasingly feeling underutilized in terms of the application of the daily routine of one line of chemistry as opposed to the broad chemical base he had acquired in industrial and analytical chemical applications from the university and through experience.

For several months, he spent sleepless nights conceptualising the business model for his nascent organisation that he started off with approximately Ksh 700,000 that was part of his severance package.

His concept was to purchase raw chemical materials for basic household detergents and sell mostly to vulnerable groups as a means of enhancing their livelihoods.

He realized a surging demand for more products from just manufacturing of a single multipurpose liquid detergent.
