Unemployment in Kenya is a major problem facing graduates. Kenyan labor market cannot absorb all the graduates from various institutions. This has made some graduates to venture into self employment to earn a living. Farming of sukuma wiki has become the best business earning many graduates thousands of money.
Sukuma wiki is easy to plant and manage. The vegetables are ready to harvest in about two months. According to some of the graduates who ventured in this business, sukuma wiki is very profitable having a ready market in most schools. Peter Simiyu affirmed planting the vegetables in their half an acre land after failing to secure a government job after graduation.
"Once I graduated, I was hopeful to get employed soon. But the worst happened when I presented my documents and were declined since they needed someone with 2 years experience. I gave up and started sukuma wiki farming, it's paying well." Simiyu noted.
Simiyu earns about ksh8,000 per week from the sales of sukuma wiki. He is ready to invest more in the business to solidify his income.
