Huge Blow to Sportpesa, Bad News to Gamblers as the Gov’t Makes This Move Concerning the Jackpot

The tag of war between Sportpesa and the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) is just getting messier as the regulator now focuses on the jackpot which has been the greatest attraction point to Sportpesa. BCLB has come out to announce that Sportpesa is not licensed to offer jackpot services in Kenya and thus has been doing so illegally.

“To run a jackpot, an operator must seek authorization from the board, provide proof of a fixed cash deposit equivalent to the jackpot being offered- this is to act as a security of the jackpot, and provide a schedule of draws to ensure officials from the Betting Control and Licensing authenticate both the drawing process and the winners,” BCLB wrote in a statement seen by the Daily Nation.

The agency has since urged Kenyans not to participate in jackpots offered by Sportpesa and other unlicensed operators in the betting and gaming industry. BCLB listed nine companies that have been cleared to offer jackpot services in Kenya which includes Infinite worldwide, Croissance Ltd, Supabet Ltd, White Rhino, Albertyne Ltd, Zumandu Ltd, Kareco Holdings Ltd, Bet Mbao Ltd, and Shop and Deliver.

This comes at a time when the agency has threatened to cancel the Sportpesa operation license again due to the change of ownership without duly notifying it. BCLB recently summoned Sportpesa owners for allegedly breaching their agreement and thus breaking the law.

Should the regulator go ahead and ban Sportpesa from offering jackpot services in Kenya, then it will be the biggest blow to the firm since the majority of the gamblers drawn to Sportpesa by the millions pledged in the jackpot. Several lucky Kenyans have previously walked away with millions from Sportpesa giving hope to others to continue trying their luck. The current midweek jackpot is at Ksh 11,517,993 while the Mega Jackpot is offering a whooping Ksh 102,487,245 for any Kenyan who correctly predicts the specifically listed matches.
