Unique Kenyan Number plates on the Roads and What They Really Mean

Vehicle and motorcycle registration in Kenya is done after one buys a car or the government and any organization buys one. There are many types of registration number plates we usually see on the Kenyan roads ranging from the government owned vehicle number plates to the diplomatic number plates for foreign country Dignitaries.

Many are aware that the regular number plates goes in a format like KCB 001 on a white and yellow surface for regular vehicles, GK for government vehicles and KMEP 090 format For motorcycles and Tuktuks.

There is a unique number plate in Kenya with the 5 CD 20 K format for example. These number plates are used for foreign diplomats in Kenya and the number plate show that the Dignitaries use laws applied to their countries of origin. These number plates were given to the ambassadors and Commissioners in the Embassies and Consulates of foreign nations in Kenya. The first number depicts the order in which the countries acknowledged Kenya as a sovereign country. The letter K shows the vehicle is being driven in Kenya.
