The Recce Squad is an elite paramilitary wing of GSU, which is tasked in combatting close terrorism and protecting the President. The Recce Squad commandos travel in an armored vehicle known as the the Reconnaissance and Command Vehicle (RCV) survivor.
The vehicle weighs 8 tons and can travel through all terrain with high mobility. The vehicle is constructed around an armored steel monocoque cell with composite add-ons that provide Level 2 ballistic and Level 2a/b mine protection to its occupants (two crew members plus a maximum of five dismounts). It also has a deflecting floor and floating seats, but the extent of IED security is uncertain.
The Survivor I RCV is powered by a 250 horsepower VM diesel engine with a power-to-weight ratio of more than 33 horsepower per tonne. It is mated to an Allison automatic transmission that features three 100 percent differential locks and steady four-wheel drive traction. The vehicle has live axles in the front and back, as well as 335/80 R20 run-flat tyres.
It has a top speed of about 100 km/h and a cruise range of 800 kilometers. The car, which comes in three or five-door models, is equipped with not only communication and auxiliary systems, but with a remote-control weapon station on the roof.
The RCV is only owned by the military or by the head of state. The car is in the same league as the Conquest Knight, made in Canada, and priced at US$600,000, which translates to around Ksh 65 million.
