Bayer East Africa in collaboration with Laikipia County Government Department of Agriculture has started distributing maize seeds to farmers in readiness for planting during the onset of the short rains.
The County has procured over 30tonnes of the certified seeds that will first be distributed to farmers in Laikipia East this month before the exercise is conducted in Laikipia West in February next year.
Speaking during the kick off of the exercise at National Cereals and Produce Board Depot in Nanyuki Deputy Governor John Mwaniki said that the seeds will assist farmers regain their momentum following the outbreak of Covid 19 that left many without money to purchase planting seeds and inputs.
Mwaniki noted that the seeds have been specially treated according to the climatic needs of every region and farmers will leap big if they follow the instructions issued by Agriculture extension officers from their areas.
The deputy governor at the same time called on Agro Vets to make sure they are selling certified seeds to farmers to make sure that they do not lose a good harvest when they are struggling from the effects of Corona.
He said this will be done in collaboration with officers from County Ministry of Agriculture to make sure that the farmers are not swindled.
Laikipia County Assembly Agriculture Committee Chair Simon Kanyutu said that he was optimistic that Laikipia West will get lion share judging from the point that they are the majority of farmers in Laikipia.
Bayer East African Representative Peter Kimburi said that they are working with the county government to empower farmers through the corrected information on best practices of agriculture more so concentrating of Agri- Business.
The farmers expressed gratitude and hoped that the yield will be as promised and they committed to follow instruction given during the planting and taking care.
