Two Boys Drown After Schools’ Closure Over Covid-19

A government officer and a Mbeere North sub-county's resident stand near an earth dam like the one into which a boy drowned, constructed by the government in the semi arid Mbeere North Sub-county.

Two boys separately drowned in Embu County dams this week as they played about after schools were closed down to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Ten-year-old Maxwell Mugambi drowned in Munandari Earth Dam in Kiambere Location of Mbeere South Sub-County on Tuesday at around 4pm as he allegedly and other boys tried to catch some wild ducks which were swimming in the dam but unfortunately he died inside.

Mbeere South Police Commander Ahmed Mohammed exposed that residents reported the matter before police visited the scene of the incident and retrieved the body and took it to the Embu Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.

Mohammed at the same time said on the same day at around 1pm Danson Macharia who was a secondary School boy drowned in Tana River near the Kamburu Hydro Power Station around 1pm as he and other boys were fishing when he allegedly slipped into the water.

The police Commander said police were called after the incident and were able to retrieve the body and also took it to the Embu Level Five Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary.

Mohammed expressed concern at the rampant incidents of drowning of children in the area calling on parents to be extra careful on their children to avoid losing them through such preventable accidents.

Kiambere Acting Chief Solomon Mbugi expressed regret over the death of Mugambi’s death noting that he felt bitter that there were some people who had allegedly seen the boys playing there but didn’t warn them.
